About the Caves, Pratinha and Camel Hill

This is a car tour with short walks, ideal for children, the elderly, and anyone who wishes to visit Chapada Diamantina without much physical effort. All attractions are easily accessible, very safe, and have ample facilities to accommodate visitors.

The day’s three main attractions are: Gruta da Fumaça, Fazenda Pratinha & Gruta Azul, and Mirante do Morro do Camelo. The latter is one of the most iconic postcard of Chapada Diamantina.

In this area of Chapada, limestone (Calcário) predominates, a type of rock that is fragile to the action of water. Because of this, the region has a large variety of caves and underground pools. Several fossils dated to over 10,000 years have been found in the Salitre Formation (where limestone predominates, approximately 700 million years old). Additionally, numerous other pieces of evidence about the seas that once covered Chapada and the Ice Age—an essential period for the formation we will visit—have been discovered.

GRUTA DA FUMAÇA + PRATINHA + GRUTA AZUL + CAMELO VIEWPOINT

We’ll depart from Lençóis at 8:00 a.m. for a 1-hour drive to Gruta da Fumaça, one of the most complete caves in the Iraquara region. There, we’ll see various speleothems, such as stalactites, stalagmites, electites, and the rare Aragonite Flower. After a brief 40-minute visit to the cave, we’ll continue by car to Fazenda Pratinha. At Pratinha River, visitors will find an array of optional activities, including snorkeling, underwater photos, kayaking, zip-lining, and more. At 3:00 p.m., we’ll head to Gruta Azul, located within the farm, where we can enjoy a natural light show in the afternoon.

Around 4:30 p.m., we’ll drive for about 40 minutes to the Camel Hill Viewpoint to catch the sunset and finish the day. We expect to be back in Lençóis around 6:30 p.m.
On the return drive, we’ll enjoy stunning views along the BR-242.

Requirements

Participants must be over 18 years old. Minors must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Physical fitness is needed for steep descents and ascents on rough terrain, crossing rivers and streams, scrambling, and long-distance walking.

Safety at Grutas + Camelo

Your safety, comfort, and enjoyment are our priorities. That’s why we work with guides trained in Pre-Hospital Care (APH) and Minimum Conduct Competencies (CMC) courses following ABNT standards, with some also certified in WAFA (check availability). All guides are equipped with first aid kits for remote areas and bring extensive mountain experience. However, we emphasize that this is not a 100% safe activity, and despite all the precautions, safety measures, and responsibilities we adopt, unforeseen events and accidents may occur. As with most adventure activities in natural environments, there is an element of risk (poisonous animals, falls resulting in fractures or abrasions, storms, floods, general accidents, etc.). Mechanical breakdowns in the transport vehicle may also cause delays or changes in the trip. The chosen itinerary takes place in wild locations where rescue procedures can be delayed (taking over 5 hours to initiate rescue, not included in our reservation services). During the activity, participants must strictly follow the instructions of the agency and guides.
